Photo of the Week – Red Canyon

The Negev is a desert and semidesert region in the southern part of Israel, an inverted triangle with the Gulf of Aqaba and the resort city of Eilat at the bottom tip. The area north of Eilat is great for hiking and photography and one of my favorite places is this small, slot canyon just off highway 12.

Photo of the Week – Judean Desert

Among deserts, the Judean desert is considered relatively small, spanning only 1,500 square kilometers, but it includes many fascinating nature reserves, historic sites and monasteries that make it an interesting and unique place to visit. An area bordered by cliffs on both sides it is a desert with running water and in one place geothermal springs. If you are into photography its primeval panoramas make it a special place to photograph. As your guide I’ll take you there to explore.

Photo of the Week – Flowers in Judean Desert

The Dead Sea and Judean desert are just a half hour drive down the hill from Jerusalem making it very accessible. It is the lowest place on earth, 409 meters below sea level, an area bordered by mountains on both sides in a desert with running water and in one area geothermal springs. I drove down this week to enjoy the hot springs and float in the mineral-rich cool sea. I can’t remember a time when i’ve seen the hills so green with so many wildflowers blooming.

An opportunity to take a few moments to review where things stand and what has been accomplished. January 2015 also marks 7 years that I have been guiding and blogging. I’ve built a website about Israel to market my guiding services, including a comprehensive blog and an online store [update, the store is no longer active]. I am using a blog theme called Twenty Twelve, a clean, modern design with more capabilities. I have now over 300 blog posts. There were over 82,000 page views in each of the last two years. There are currently 308 people who have subscribed to my blog and another 334 via Facebook.

Here are some of my favorite posts from the last couple of years.

On November 20th a rocket from Gaza landed just 6.5km from our house in Jerusalem while I was writing a post about the Jerusalem botanical garden during Operation Pillar of Defense.

Because I studied computers and worked in High Tech before becoming a tour guide, I wrote an article about how the museums in Israel are using technology to share their collections with the world.

Based on an email exchange with a pastor in England asking about the sycamine tree mentioned in Luke 17:6 I researched and wrote about it.

Starting on August 5th every week on Sunday I’ve posted one of my photographs of Israel as a Photo of the Week.

I wrote two blog posts about early photographs taken in the Holy Land, by Francis Bedford on the 1862 visit of Edward, Prince of Wales and by photographers of the American Colony at the turn of the century.

There were a number of sites that were on my list: Mar Saba, Sebaste, Mount Gerizim and Omrit— I visited them and wrote them up on my blog.

Photo of the Week – Flamingo

The Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the most widespread species of the flamingo family. At the salt marsh you can find a colony of more than 100 flamingos that vacation just north of Eilat most of the year. According to expert Keith Marsh from Bird Forum besides the flamingos you will be able to spot white storks, herons, waders and a wide variety and number of raptors, especially in the autumn and spring during migration. There are few better birding areas in the Western Palaearctic than Eilat on the Red Sea coast of Israel where more than 420 species of birds have been recorded.

The technical details – the photo was taken with a Nikon D90 digital camera and a 50-500mm Sigma lens in November (ISO 800, 500mm, F6.3 at 1/400 sec).

Even to get a group portrait (shot at 270mm) my regular 18-200mm lens would not have been enough.
